Summer Camp FOMO

July 27, 2018 in Appaman Style, DIY, NYC, Press, Star Style, Uncategorized

We are currently receiving footage from some of Appaman’s youngest members out on Summer camp, its got us suffering serious bouts of nostalgia. Looking at the number of summer camps popping up for adults and “millennial” (apparently a distinct category) we’re not alone. Before you shill out the big bucks on a  kidults camp here are some great alternatives we’ve found in NYC.

Kayaking

One of the most iconic summer camp activities has to be kayaking. It may bring back memories of soggy feet, soggier snacks and a rising sense of panic as your kayak moves in circles while your friends streak ahead of you but now you’re all grown up you can live out your kayak dreams, and see if you’ve improved, right here in Manhattan at  MKC Kaya

Friendship Bracelets

For those whose friendships survived kayaking together friendship bracelets are a truly take anywhere anytime past time. We’ve been making them at our desks.

Lake Swimming

While I’d struggle to suggest an open body of water in Manhattan you should swim in there are plenty of lakes in upstate New York that might take your fancy. Lake Tiorati is only one hour out of manhattan and located in Harriman state park.

…which brings us to our next activity.

Hiking

There are so many hiking opportunities and now that you don’t have an over eager instructor hassling you along you can take your own leisurely pace, and even stop for a picnic!

Fencing

While not all summer camps had fencing I have distinct memories of my lack of coordination and fear of sharp objects being showcased during summer camp. Manhattan Fencing runs camps AND classes, or even better, or you can make like I am and just rewatch the the Parent Trap, I still get chills watching this scene.

And on that note we will leave you, with a glimpse of THE most teenage bunk arrangement we have ever seen from one of 2018’s summer camps!

Staff Picks: Camp Flicks

For so many kids, there are two times of year: summer camp, and the rest of the year. Camp movies are the perfect thing to enjoy as a family during that final stretch between late spring and the most glorious weeks of the year. The timeless setting is a nostalgic treat for adults, and what kid doesn’t love a story about minimally supervised adventures where the children reign over the adults nearly every time?

Here are some of our favorite camp films for the family to enjoy:

1. The Parent Trap (1961)

All generations can enjoy this camp classic together, where teenage twins Hallie and Annie, who were separated at birth, meet at summer camp for the first time and decide to switch places. We love the ‘90s remake too, but there’s something about the groovy ’60s charm of the original Hayley Mills version that can never be duplicated. It’s worth it if only for “Let’s Get Together.”

2. The Parent Trap (1998)

It’s rare that a remake of a beloved classic film can hold its own next to the original, but this one arguably does. Maybe it has something to do with the camp setting being so timeless. The tradition of camp is what makes it so special (even when you’re in trouble for pranking your bunkmates).

3. Addams Family Values (1993)

Wednesday (Christina Ricci) and Pugsley Addams aren’t exactly a great fit for the rah-rah, sunshine-and-rainbows vibe of Camp Chippewa…especially because it’s not really a very friendly place when you’re an outsider who marches to the beat of your own (morbid) drummer. Families with a offbeat sense humor and an appreciation for the macabre will enjoy this underrated dark, campy comedy and its all-star cast. It’s rated PG-13, so it’s best for older kids.

4. Heavy Weights (1995)

A group of boys find fun and camaraderie at a camp for overweight kids, which isn’t as bad as they’d feared…at first. Then, the camp goes bankrupt and is taken over by a maniacal, self-serving fitness guru, played by Ben Stiller. Kids will love the snappy, quotable one liners (“Attention campers! Lunch has been cancelled due to a lack of hustle.”) and the glorious face off against the evil villain. Adults may roll their eyes at the crude humor, but that’s ok. Written by Judd Apatow, and featuring a young Kenan Thompson.

5. It Takes Two (1995)

Ok, so maybe it’s another film where two lookalikes meet at camp (one rich, one poor), but this Parent Trap inspired comedy, starring Kirstie Alley and Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, was mentioned by almost every staff member at Appaman HQ. It’s certainly one of the most memorable films of the Olsen twin empire, and features a food fight and plenty of kid-lead hijinks.

6. Moonrise Kingdom (2012)

The quintessential summer love story. We all have memories of wanting to spend all our time with our camp flings. Wes Anderson perfectly captures those memories in this quirky summer camp flick.

7. The Baby-Sitters Club (1995)

This time, the kids are the counselors! It’s summer time and the teenage entrepreneurs known as the Baby-Sitters Club have started a day camp for all the kids in town. When they’re not running the show at Camp BSC, they’re coming to terms with their own adolescent coming-of-age narratives.

8. Camp Rock (2008)

Disney’s iconic straight-to-tv movie deserves to be treasured forever because it launched the career of pop juggernaut Demi Lovato. It also features the Jonas brothers with super questionable 00’s haircuts. Set at a camp for talented musicians, this film follows the journey of the Camp Rock kids as they prepare for a huge final showcase. It has everything you want out of a camp movie – slapstick comedy, now-outdated fashion trends, classic camp shenanigans, romance and  — of course — awesome original music. Show up for the nostalgia, stay for the genuinely catchy tunes.

9. Troop Beverly Hills (1989)

It’s not a “camp flick” in the summer camp sense, but this ’80s gem is too good to overlook. A group of wealthy Wilderness Troop girls, lead by the fashionable and fabulous Phyllis Neffler (Shelley Long) must finally learn to rough it if they’re going to compete for ultimate glory against the more seasoned scouts at the annual jamboree. Anyone who thinks you can’t “scout” in style has never seen this film, and its over-the-top, impeccably styled wardrobe.

10. Wet Hot American Summer (2001) — For grown ups only!

You’ll have to wait until your littles are off to their own camp before watching this one. This farce/satire is one of the best cult classic comedies ever made, and certainly one of the best camp films. Set on the last day of camp in 1981, it follows of group of counselors and staff as they wrap up unfinished business (and romance) before they must return to the real world and leave the magic of camp.  The bizarre and absurdist humor isn’t for everyone, but if you’re into the weirdness, you’ll treasure this film.

Bonus! A TV series we can’t forget: Salute Your Shorts (1991-1993)

Younger Gen-X’ers and older Millennials have fond memories of this excellent television show from Nickelodeon’s early ’90s heyday, before kids’ television became as highly produced and stylized as it is today. The teenage campers of Camp Anawanna have different backgrounds and personalities, but stuck together at camp (with hardly any adults), they have fun, prank their clueless counselor, and form lasting bonds.

Let’s talk: Swim Shorts!

January 26, 2018 in Appaman Style

Here at Appaman we figure it’s always summer somewhere, which is why we are so excited about our brand new Resort 2018 collection. Featuring hard-wearing, versatile fabrics, bold prints and classic styles, these pieces are perfect for a summer escape or to stock up for spring.

Shorts are the staple of any boy’s summer closet, so here we break down our three boys swim offerings in Resort 2018:

These sharp looking shorts are of the land and of the sea. They have four pockets, belt loops, a zip fly with snap closure, an adjustable inner waistband. They’re also are made from quick-dry board short material, so you can wear ’em to swim or to lunch. They are the tailored short you know and love in a swim-friendly fabric, so they are sure to be a summer favorite. Pair the Hybrid Shorts with our rash guard tops for protection from the sun and surf, or with our Playa Shirt for a more structured, dressed-up look.

MID-LENGTH SWIM TRUNKS

New length! By popular request, we designed a classic fit swim short to add to our line. The Mid Length Swim Trunks hit above the knee (shorter than our classic swim trunk) and are perfect for splashing in the surf and playing on the sand. They feature an elastic waist with soft mesh brief lining and a back flap pocket (for storing shells and pirate treasure, obviously). Pick from a super cool seashell print or the bold Teal Dot print (we can’t pick a favorite).

The options are a-plenty with these bright, lightweight super soft swim shorts. Mix-and-match with your favorite rash guard. Two rear pockets, elastic waistband in rear panel, faux drawcord. Inner mesh underwear.

SWIM TRUNKS

Our best-selling bright, lightweight super soft swim shorts are BACK in four incredible prints. Feeling beachy?  Blue Beach print. Feeling brave? Hammer Time is the print for you. Dreaming of looting pirate treasure on a tropical island? Neotropics. Obsessed with low-key cool graphics? Toucan Grey is your guy.  Mix and match with your favorite rash guard for protection from the sun and surf. Summer’s Last Day at Appaman HQ

June 14, 2013 in Appaman News

Today is a bittersweet day at Appaman HQ as we bid farewell to a much beloved member of our team as she takes the next step in her career. Summer Walker, our amazing production manager, is moving on to follow her dream full time, and we would be crushed if we weren’t SO DARN EXCITED for her and all the plans she has in the works. (We can’t wait to spill the beans when it’s time!)

Summer has been an integral part of Appaman’s success over the past five years, working right along side Lynn and Harald to grow the company into what it is today. Everyone from our sales reps and boutique owners to our factories and shipping companies has worked with Summer and knows what an awesome lady she is – warm, friendly, with business savvy to boot. In addition to her professional expertise, she has grace and moxie in spades and truly epitomizes the adventurous spirit that Appaman is all about.

Appaman HQ will not be the same in Summer’s absence, but we know that this is just the beginning of a long and successful career, so we’re smiling.

(Plus, she promised to come hang out with us later.)

Adieu, Summer, and come back soon for another Pizza Friday!

Colors of Summer – Our Tribute to Ombre

May 2, 2013 in Featured, New This Season

Is there any palette more inspirational than that of Mother Nature herself? For our Spring/Summer 2013 collection, we were inspired by the blissful beauty of the ocean, where all it takes is sand, a surfboard, and a little sun to make a truly perfect day from sunrise to sunset.

We took the natural ombres from the sea and the sky to make great color options for beach bum boys and girls.

Take a look at some of our inspiration and outfit ideas:

Pay it Forward – Summer Walker

December 5, 2012 in Uncategorized

Read all about Summer’s choice of charity!

“For this year’s Seven Weeks of Giving, I have chosen the Food Bank for New York City as my charity. Tragically, each year millions of people go hungry in the USA and many of these people live right here in New York City. In addition to distributing up to 400,000 meals a day, Food Bank helps the NYC community by running nutrition education programs and providing income tax service for the economically disadvantaged. They also do massive amounts of research and lobbying to help find long term solutions to food poverty in our country. Now more than ever, especially with the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, it’s important that we provide support to important institutions like Food Bank NYC. Check them out and offer your support at http://www.foodbanknyc.org/.
