Introducing…Erica!

December 1, 2013 in Uncategorized

erica

This summer the Appaman team was pleased to bring on board our very own ray of California sunshine, Erica Atkins! With her killer vintage style, magnetic personality, and affinity for Appaman HQ’s fave TV series Downton Abbey, Erica and her West Coast charm help make our office a great place to be. Erica brought in her past children’s industry expertise to work with our major wholesale accounts, and she is the logistical mastermind behind getting Appaman’s goods organized and shipped to department stores and other large retailers around the country…which, as industry folks know, is quite a task.

So, this post is long overdue, but nevertheless, we wish a very warm welcome to Erica, a wonderful addition to our staff.

Appaman’s Five Weeks of Giving 2013 – Why Hunger

November 27, 2013 in Appaman News

Thanksgiving is tomorrow and that means Appaman’s Five Weeks of Giving is underway. Every year, each staff member has the opportunity to choose a charity that means something to them, and Appaman makes a donation in the employee’s name.

Giving-hearth

Doing a little something extra for others is our favorite way to get into the holiday season. We hope you’ll get on board and be encouraged to donate to a cause that is important to you. Need inspiration? We’ll be providing some info about each organization chosen by the Appaman staff members, so check back each week to learn about which causes are important to us.

Our first charity, chosen by Lynn Husum, is Why Hunger.

ABOUT WHY HUNGER

It is truly a shame that in 2013 there are people suffering from hunger in our own backyards. To help end this tragic reality Lynn will donate her Five Weeks of Giving weeks of giving to WhyHunger’s annual Hungerthon campaign.

WhyHunger is a leader in building the movement to end hunger and poverty by connecting people to nutritious, affordable food and by supporting grassroots solutions that inspire self-reliance and community empowerment.

For 28 years, WhyHunger has been challenging the idea that anyone should go hungry and changing the way we nourish our country through Hungerthon, an annual radio campaign to raise funds and awareness to fight hunger in America. Hungerthon 2013 will help more families secure healthy, affordable food and invest in more long-term sustainable solutions to end hunger than ever before.

Behind the Scenes at Appaman: Susan’s Sketchbooks

October 10, 2013 in Appaman News, New This Season

Susan Kay, hard at work!

Susan Kay, hard at work!

Susan Kay is our ultra-talented designer that’s responsible for taking the Appaman aesthetic and turning it into a fashion-forward, cohesive collection with cool and wearable pieces. We asked her to share some pages from her sketchbook so our fans could take a peek behind the scenes into her creative process and see where some of their favorite Fall/Winter 2013 pieces began.

There are many steps involved in design and production, starting with Susan’s initial meetings with Harald, where they discuss looks that inspire them, favorite vintage styles, and upcoming trends they love. Lynn weighs in with feedback from buyers about what our customers like and styles they want to see.

Check out Appaman’s Pinterest page to see what inspires us this season

In the meantime, Susan begins to sketch, and the ideas start to come to life. She draws out croquis (fashion sketches of outfits) and individual pieces to visualize the garments and establish the look of the season. She experiments with different designs she has in mind and adds notes about the detailing.

Most of the styles will undergo lots of revisions before they go to production (if they make it that far), so it’s always fun to look back on the process and see the origins of some of our favorite pieces…

  • Here’s an early sketch of a modern, casual cheerleader-inspired look, which pairs a stylized varsity jacket with a pleated skirt and knit hat. Our collection features this style in the form of the Varsity Bomber with quilted stitching, the Box Pleat Skirt, and Tilly Hat.

The final product

  • For boys, Susan imagined a preppy vintage cardigan, inspired by letter sweaters and classic Ivy League style. We ended up with the Thompson Cardigan, which looks updated and modern with our Skinny Twill Pants.

This look was practically custom-made for our model, Daniel

Lots of revisions, but we think it turned out OK 🙂

Summer’s Last Day at Appaman HQ

June 14, 2013 in Appaman News

Today is a bittersweet day at Appaman HQ as we bid farewell to a much beloved member of our team as she takes the next step in her career. Summer Walker, our amazing production manager, is moving on to follow her dream full time, and we would be crushed if we weren’t SO DARN EXCITED for her and all the plans she has in the works. (We can’t wait to spill the beans when it’s time!)

Summer has been an integral part of Appaman’s success over the past five years, working right along side Lynn and Harald to grow the company into what it is today. Everyone from our sales reps and boutique owners to our factories and shipping companies has worked with Summer and knows what an awesome lady she is – warm, friendly, with business savvy to boot. In addition to her professional expertise, she has grace and moxie in spades and truly epitomizes the adventurous spirit that Appaman is all about.

Appaman HQ will not be the same in Summer’s absence, but we know that this is just the beginning of a long and successful career, so we’re smiling.

(Plus, she promised to come hang out with us later.)

Adieu, Summer, and come back soon for another Pizza Friday!

Fun fact: Summer also has amazing hair

Meet Jenna, the Newest Member of Team Appaman

May 2, 2013 in Appaman News

Oh, hey, Jenna!

Oh, hey, Jenna!

Back in January, Appaman HQ grew by one more. This is Jenna Timmermann, who came to NYC by way of Fort Worth, Texas. And can we just say, are we ever glad she decided to come up north. She’s smart, funny, incredibly organized, and a great addition to our staff. (She also says “y’all” a lot, which we just love.)

Jenna works side-by-side with Alyssa (literally, their desks are right next to each other) and together, they form an ultra-organized, rag-tag duo that works with our boutique wholesale accounts and our reps around the country. You may also meet Jenna at the showroom, or in the Appaman booth at one of the trade shows — she is a wiz at planning and making sure that the Appaman sales team is prepped with everything they need.

Great to have you on board, Jenna!

Here at Appaman we believe in giving credit where credit is due. That said, we’d like to give a huge shout out to our lifestyle and catalog photographer, Joshua Paul.

He is incredibly professional to work with and a ton of fun. He has an amazing bio – he’s traveling the world over, photographing for major publications. We are honored to have him onboard our trip.

December 12, 2012 in Uncategorized

Katie Luscombe, a lovely midwestern gal with a quirky sense of humor, incredible talents in nail art, baby naming, and impressive journalistic talents has officially joined Team Appaman. She runs our online division bringing fun social media, great customer service and online e-commerce charm.

We have been lucky enough to know Katie for a few years from her background in the children’s industry and when a position opened up, we pounced. This post is long overdue, but since Katie typically does them and she is that kind of humble gal, it didn’t get done. So please give a warm welcome to Katie when you get a minute.
