Appaman’s Official Guide to New York’s Best Pizza

September 7, 2018 in NYC

We brought you New York’s best burgers, now for for its flatter, more shareable cousin: pizza. We went around the office to get some real pizza recs from real New Yorkers, and it turns out everyone has strong feelings about this iconic New York staple.

Here’s what they said:

Katie, Web Manager and someone who feels so strongly about pizza she couldn’t settle for just one

“The best pizza in Bed Stuy, Brooklyn is found at Saraghina, a cozy Italian restaurant and bakery with a wood fired oven. Their Neapolitan pizza is a neighborhood staple and perfect for sharing with friends.”

And also – “One of the most legendary pizza pilgrimages in New York is trip to Di Fara Pizza in Midwood Brooklyn. Owner Domenico DeMarco opened his corner shop in 1964 after emigrating to Brooklyn from Italy, and today, DeMarco himself makes up to 150 pies a day using imported ingredients from Italy. Be prepared: there is always a wait!”

Tina, Wholesale Account Manager

The ONLY pizza spot Tina will go to in Brooklyn is San Remo Pizzeria and Restaurant in Ridgewood for “the best pizza of all time.” Her fave is the Grandma Slice!

Harald, Appaman Co-Founder

“My fave is Giardini on Smith Street, Caroll Gardens for a classic New York neighborhood pizza joint. The kids meet here after school and are well taken care of by Jerry, the owner.”

Kathleen, Production Manager

Juliana’s Pizza is the best in the Dumbo/Brooklyn Heights area. The ingredients are always fresh, the crust is never burnt and the staff are great. The line is always ridiculously long but you can place a ‘to go’ order and eat it across the street in Brooklyn Bridge Park. No other pizza joint has such an amazing location. It’s right by the water and the views are incredible.”

Roberta’s in Bushwick! They now have multiple locations but the original in Bushwick is by far the best. Make sure you order the Bee Sting – not on the menu but a MUST try! The atmosphere is loud but welcoming and they have a lovely garden with a bar in the back. Fun cocktails, creative pizza combination and dough that is to die for! 100% worth the wait.”

“The best no fuss, can-always-count-on thin crust pizza can be found at Emmet’s in Soho. My favorite part is that it’s cut into squares and easy to share!”

Our resident vegan says Double Zero in the East Village is the place to go to fill your cheesy cravings, “I can have all my old favorites from my pre-vegan days — now made with a non-dairy topping — and they still hit the spot when I’m in the mood for cheesy Italian food. ” These woodfire oven pizzas are almost too beautiful to eat, but make sure you do, as they more than hold their own against their carnivorous counterparts, Val says she has “never had anything there that wasn’t delicious!”

“Archie’s in Bushwick has a delicious thin crust pizza cut into easy squares for sharing, but where this place really wins is location and opening hours. Located deep within the Bermuda triangle of Bushwick’s best bars and clubs, you could spend a nice afternoon at Archie’s, but it’s also open till four A.M. and has a full bar, making it the perfect spot to start off an evening, or to end it debriefing the night’s events over pizza and a cocktail.”
