Behind the Scenes: A Day at Rock-Rock-Rockaway Beach

February 8, 2018 in Appaman News, NYC

Chewing out a rhythm on my bubble gum
The sun is out and I want some
It’s not hard, not far to reach
We can hitch a ride to Rockaway Beach.
– The Ramones “Rockaway Beach”

For Appaman’s Spring/Summer 2018 campaign, we headed out to one of our favorite local getaways: Rockaway Beach, Queens. Since the earliest days of Appaman, we have drawn our inspiration from the spirit and style of our hometown of New York City, so whenever we can, we love to do our photoshoots “on location” in the places that inspire them.

Most people wouldn’t consider New York to be much of a beach town, but like it says in the Ramones song, the sandy coast of Rockaway Beach is never far away. With just a quick swipe of the MetroCard, you can hop on the subway and emerge at the coast of the Atlantic Ocean, pop open your umbrella, and go for a surf or swim without ever leaving New York City limits.

Here’s a look behind the scenes of our day in the Rockaways:

The beach wasn’t officially open for the summer yet, so we had the place pretty much all to ourselves.

All hands on deck! Appaman co-founder/boss lady Lynn is ready for anything with a collection of accessories and props.

As they waited for their turn in front of the cameras, Cornelius and our other models had fun hunting around for shells, rocks, sealife, and other treasures.

Horseshoe crab!

A shoeless model hitches a ride onto girls’ designer Val so she can change into her next look.

So it’s possible that we weren’t technically allowed to use this lifeguard stand, but we managed to sneak in a few quick pics before anyone spotted us.

Remember how we said we had the place all to ourselves? We were also on a dead end street, so there were hardly any other people around. So, you could imagine our surprise when, in a magical and serendipitous moment, just when our models seemed to be itching for a break, we heard the jingle of an ice cream truck coming our way! We couldn’t believe our luck and knew we couldn’t miss the moment, so we bought ice cream for all our models and started snapping away.

Not long after, it was time to relax. After a long, busy day of shooting, Team Appaman kicked back with late taco lunch at Rockaway Beach Surf Club.

Meet the Newest Appaman Staffers!

December 12, 2015 in Appaman News

Appaman's newest staffers

In recent months, we’ve welcomed a few new faces here at Team Appaman, and it’s high time we introduce you to the newest members of our crew. As a small company, we’re a sum of our parts and want our fans and customers to get to know who is working hard together behind the scenes to bring your favorite Appaman gear from an idea to a shoppable, wearable and adorable product:

Lisa Christiano Appaman

Lisa Christiano (Wholesale Account Manager)
When our friend Jenna headed back home to her native Texas, Lisa came on board, bringing a longtime love of fashion and a retail background to the wholesale side of Appaman. Lisa is from Rockland County (but moving to Jersey City with her fluffy little dog, Ghost) and loves to read, write, travel, and watch movies. She is always down for some serious Harry Potter chat. But be warned that she’s a loyal Gryffindor before getting into a debate about the best Hogwarts house.

Danielle Civil

Danielle Civil  (Production/Design Assistant)
Remember Intern Dani from our Intern Q&A? Well, she’s back! Dani was such a great intern that we insisted on snatching her back up as a full-time employee as soon as she graduated from the University of Delaware, where she earned a a degree in apparel design and a minor in entrepreneurial business. Dani is from the suburbs of Philly, and loves animals (particularly sloths and manatees, but she has cats, turtles, and fish of her own), travel, photography, yoga, chai tea lattes, and Game of Thrones. Dani has had her sights set on the fashion biz for a long time. In her fifth grade yearbook she predicted that she’d be a fashion designer. Good thinking, fifth grade Dani!

Valerie Schwall

Valerie Schwall (Girls Designer)
It’s a basic requirement that all Appaman employees must love dogs, but for Valerie, it’s an interest that is particularly career relevant! When Valerie was younger, she decided to teach herself to sew by creating clothing and accessories for her dog. Soon after, she applied and was accepted to fashion school with a sewing portfolio composed entirely of dog clothing. At FIT, she expanded her interest to human clothing but still loves making beautiful wardrobes for her fur child, Meatball, who dresses better than many people. Valerie hails from New Paltz, a hippie town in upstate New York, where she gained a soft spot for tie dye. You’ll usually catch her in her signature head-to-toe black, except for when she and Meatball decide to wear matching holiday outfits.

That’s a Wrap! Behind the Scenes at the Spring/Summer 2016 Photoshoot

June 1, 2015 in Appaman News, NYC

It’s that time of year: We’ve styled, shot, and wrapped yet another Appaman Spring/Summer collection. We have so much fun hanging out with our models and watching all of our hard work come to life on camera.

As always, it’s all hands on deck to make sure these busy few days run smoothly. It’s a challenge, and sometimes a bit hectic to keep all the clothes and kids where they need to be at the right time, but with a little teamwork and a whole lot of organization, we somehow manage to get it all done and have a good time.

We are really excited about some great new designs we have in store for our fans and wish we could show you more, but you’ll have to wait til Spring 2016 to see the full collection in stores. For now, here are a few behind the scenes photos of our recent shoot here in our Chrystie Street studio. Stay tuned til next spring!

Introducing…Kathleen!

November 25, 2014 in Appaman News

It’s time to introduce Team Appaman’s newest member: production manager Kathleen Reardon. An 8-year New Yorker by way of Kansas, Kathleen has been interested in fashion since she learned how to hold scissors, a skill she acquired in order to make her own paper doll clothes.

Today, Kathleen is still using those finely-tuned coordination and logistical skills to turn Appaman designs from creative ideas into actual products you can shop for, buy, and wear. As our in-house production manager, Kathleen works behind the scenes to make sure that the fabrics are dyed & woven, garments are sewn, design & fit adjustments are made, and that the completed garments are labeled and packed on freighters or planes on time to be shipped across the ocean to our warehouse, where they’ll be distributed to stores around the country.

When she’s not busy making fashion magic happen, Kathleen likes traveling, hiking, cooking, crafting, home decorating, going to baseball games,  and — naturally — shopping. We love having her around the office for her positive attitude and her ability to tackle any kind of project that comes her way. We also like the constant supply of candy she keeps in her desk, but that’s really just an extra bonus.

Team Appaman’s Volunteer Day at Baby Buggy

November 4, 2014 in NYC

Many friends and fans of Appaman know that one of our favorite charities is Baby Buggy. Established by Jessica Seinfeld in 2001, Baby Buggy works with a network of over 100 established community-based organizations across the country to distribute new and gently used essentials, from cribs and strollers to clothing and bottles. Donations come from both individuals and from companies like Appaman.

After donations come in, the goods need to be sorted, folded and packed so that Baby Buggy can distribute them according to the needs of their network of organizations. Volunteers are often needed to help with this part of the process, so the staff at Appaman HQ thought it would be fun to head over to Baby Buggy’s NYC headquarters, located in the Garment District of Manhattan, and lend a hand ourselves for a couple of hours.

We had a great time and loved getting a chance to go behind the scenes at a great organization. Thanks to everyone at Baby Buggy for hosting our crew. Keep doing what you do!

Behind the Scenes: Intern Q&A with Danielle

August 12, 2014 in Appaman News, NYC

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to be an intern at Appaman HQ? For Part 2 of our Intern Q&A series, we sat down with Danielle, our helpful, responsible, and all around awesome summer intern, to find out what she thought of her time as our right-hand gal.

Danielle Civil, Production/Design Intern

danielle

This is Danielle, she is very cool.

School: University of Delaware

Major: Apparel Design

Minor: Entrepreneurial Studies

Appaman: So, what was a typical day like at Appaman? Who did you work with the most?

Danielle: I did a lot of different things. It was all over the place…in a good way! I worked with everyone in the office, in all of the departments.

A: Yeah, that is how things usually go here. You did a lot of work with Nicole on the production side. What kind of projects were you focused on?

D: I worked a lot with the samples for Spring/Summer 2015. I would measure the new samples as they came in and compare them to the technical specs, so we could see if the factory was making the style how they’re supposed to. We then took the most recent samples to fittings to see if the fit was right according to the specs, or if the specs needed to be changed to get the right fit.

A: What was your favorite thing that you worked on?

D: I liked seeing the whole development process. Measuring samples, making changes, going to fittings.

A: Did you do anything at Appaman that was different than what you’ve done in class?

D: It’s different than what you do in school. I got to touch on a lot of different “behind the scenes” work. I’d never done anything with wholesale or online sales, for example. I’d had a little production experience, but nothing in-depth.

A: What area of the fashion industry do you think you want to go into?

D: Design or production

A: Ok, now most importantly, what was it like working with Party Hat, our office dog, every day?

D: Awesome. He is so fluffy. [Appaman note: Correct answer, Danielle]

A: Do you have any advice for other students who are looking to intern in the fashion industry?

D: Look for something you like, not just the first or easiest internship to get. You want to see if you could see yourself working there or in a company like it. Also, start looking early so you’re not rushed to find something. Reach out directly to companies that you’re interested in, because they don’t always post internship openings. They might not need to.

Thanks, Danielle! You earned an A+

It’s Trade Show Time!

August 5, 2014 in Appaman News

Team Appaman send a big “hello” from the ENK Children’s Club trade show at Pier 94 in New York City. This international exhibition of children’s clothing is where we get to meet many of our buyers from around the country and catch up with other industry pals, including designers, members of the press/blogosphere, and more.

One of the best parts about attending trade shows is getting to “launch” a new season’s collection in person and speak one-on-one to our retailers about the new styles we’re so excited to show. As a small company, lots of love goes into designing each and every piece that ends up on the salesroom floor (and eventually, in stores). Even as Appaman grows, co-founders Harald and Lynn are as closely involved in the process as ever. In fact, many of our garments are directly inspired by Harald’s childhood growing up in Norway or have another personal story behind them. Every fabric that’s selected, and every detail from patches and pockets to studs and snaps is carefully considered by all members of our design team, so getting feedback directly from our customers is critical.

Check out our Spring/Summer 2014 Inspiration on Pinterest

February 15, 2014 in New This Season

Every season, we share our inspiration with you on our Pinterest page. The creative process kicks off with the design team at Appaman HQ collecting images that, when put together, establish a feeling we want to capture in the collection. Vintage photos, patterns, color palettes, anything goes!

Click the images below to visit our inspiration boards for girl and boy. This year, we wanted to pay tribute the relaxed, carefree, nostalgic style of vintage California beach/surf culture. We hope we like what you see!

Summer is all about having fun and creating memories. We were inspired by retro beach style: bright colors, bold patterns, surfboards and motorcycles.
