Mom Hacks: Back to School Tips
It’s back to school time for families around the country. Raise your hand if you’ve pledged to make this school year more organized and less stressful than last year. Yes, us, too. So what steps can you take to make sure your kids are set up for success this year? Follow these tips on getting organized for back to school:
Lunch is Ready!
Prep lunch the night before. We love these sandwich-free lunch box ideas. Or better yet, ask your kids to pitch in with the lunch making duties! A recent article in The Washington Post touted the benefits of having your children make their own lunch. By asking them to take charge of their lunch, it gives them responsibility and allows you some free time. Don’t worry if the end result isn’t pretty (or not 100% nutritionally balanced), you’re doing a good thing!
Lay out their clothes for the week ahead, so there’s no last minute pulling clothes out of the drawers before the bus arrives. We love the idea of labeling a different shelf for each different day of the week. To make it easier, try a hanging shelving unit (we love the sturdy canvas hanging shelves and drawers from Land of Nod pictured above). After School Snack Station
Whether it’s you that’s home with the kiddos after school or a sitter, wouldn’t it be SO much easier to have a designated drawer organized with exactly the snacks you want them to munch on when they get home? This way there’s no rooting around in the kitchen trying to find hidden candy bars. Have them choose two things from the healthy snack bin or drawer and you can rest assured their mid-day munch won’t be a handful of Pez.
Entryway Hall of Fame
Make their exits and entrances as seamless as possible with a well organized entryway (aka the place they drop all of their stuff). Invest in a storage bench, coat hooks, bins to toss their dirty shoes in and baskets to sort their homework and all letters home from school.
