It’s President’s Day, and you know what that means…NO SCHOOL! Heck yes! If you’re in NYC, we know you’ll be looking for something to do with the family on your day off, and we have one recommendation that is sure to be a hit with both kids and adults: batik, the ancient method of using wax and dye to create images on fabric.
We can’t say enough great things about Hiho Batik, a retail shop and art studio in Park Slope, Brooklyn, where can you shop from Hiho’s own line of beautiful, bright, one-of-a-kind batik clothing for kids and adults, or you can get hands-on and make your own creation on the spot. It’s like tie dying and painting your own pottery joined forces for the ultimate DIY experience that’s great for practically all ages and skill levels.
In fact, Appaman loves Hiho so much that we went there for our own staff appreciation party…sans kids! (We weren’t kidding about the “all ages” thing.) What made our experience so great is how Hiho owner Julia Silver Gordon has broken down a potentially complicated and messy process into something anyone can do with great results.
Here’s how our trip went:
Another year, another great time had by Appaman and friends at the Second Annual Gowanus Grand Prix. This year, 20 slot car racing teams competed in the tournament, headed by none other than Appaman co-founder (and all around awesome guy), Trackmaster Harald Husum. All proceeds from the event went to benefit Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation for Childhood Cancer, and thanks to our sponsors, Halyard’s Bar (for the cool and friendly venue), Izze (for tasty beverages), Skinny Pop (for awesome healthy snacks), Whole Foods (for delicious sandwiches), and Tattly (for THE best temporary tattoos we’ve ever seen), the event was a huge success! Another thanks to our friends and fans for coming out to Brooklyn on a chilly Sunday morning and bringing the fun. We couldn’t have done it without your great attitudes, generosity, and (lest we forget) your mad racing skills.
We’re already excited for next year! Scroll down to see photos from the event (click to enlarge).
Congrats to the winning team, the Grossman Boys! It was a tight race, but they triumphed.
More images after the jump…
Get ready, Appaman fans! Our Spring/Summer 2013 collection is already arriving in stores, and soon you’ll be able to get it right here on Appaman.com. As always, we’ve got a special treat, a super fun behind-the-scenes video (with super catchy original music by Boots) where you get to see some awesome boys and girls in our awesome new threads, demonstrating how they look “in action.”
This video was shot in Red Hook, Brooklyn, a neighborhood near and dear to our hearts that was hit hard last year by Hurricane Sandy. Watching this clip gives of lots of happy memories of good times in BK, and we hope you have as as much fun watching it as we did making it!
And a thanks goes to Alyssa, who can include choreography among her list of many talents.
Some of our favorite looks (click images to enlarge):
This summer the Appaman team was pleased to bring on board our very own ray of California sunshine, Erica Atkins! With her killer vintage style, magnetic personality, and affinity for Appaman HQ’s fave TV series Downton Abbey, Erica and her West Coast charm help make our office a great place to be. Erica brought in her past children’s industry expertise to work with our major wholesale accounts, and she is the logistical mastermind behind getting Appaman’s goods organized and shipped to department stores and other large retailers around the country…which, as industry folks know, is quite a task.
So, this post is long overdue, but nevertheless, we wish a very warm welcome to Erica, a wonderful addition to our staff.

It’s been a stylish winter for Tabitha and Loretta Broderick, 3 year-old twin daughters of Sarah Jessica Parker and husband Matthew Broderick. The adorable mini-fashionistas have been spotted all over NYC in cute and coordinated ensembles, no doubt thanks to their style icon mom.
Their jackets of choice? Appaman!
Here’s the trio in matching motorcycle style. SJP’s leather moto jacket looks great with the girls’ Appaman Rivington Jackets:
Just as cute as Red Riding Hood herself in coordinating Little Red Jackets, accessorized with one hot pink knit Emma Hat:
Carrie Bradshaw herself would undoubtedly approve of the fur-collared, double-breasted Madison Coat, accessorized with a floppy, bright purple Ombre Cap:

“Mack and Third is a non-profit organization that provides assistance to the homeless population of Detroit, Michigan, along with the food banks and shelters that serve them. Their annual summer concert Mack and Third Live, is an event which provides food, toiletries, medical screenings and dental services to homeless attendees.
I discovered Mack and Third while listening to an interview of the artist Kem. Raised in Detroit, he overcame addiction and homelessness to eventually become a successful singer, songwriter, and producer. I am always touched by stories of people who triumph over formidable circumstances and use their platform to help others. Mack and Third’s commitment to the Detroit community is a shining example of this.”
