It’s Norwegian National Day and we’re celebrating our heritage!

May 17th is Norwegian National Day. In honor of our heritage, here are some facts you might not know about Appaman!

1. Appaman means “monkey man” in Norwegian. Appaman is inspired by, and named after, the childhood companion of co-founder Harald Husum. While growing up in Norway, Harald befriended a corduroy ape named Appaman. Together they traveled the fields and fjords of their native land, sharing many fantastic adventures.

2. Years later, when Harald and his wife Lynn (the other co-founder) were designing the first line, Lynn came up with the idea to use Appaman as the inspiration for the logo.

3. The original Appaman lives in our Manhattan headquarters. He’s too old to handle the daily commute from Brooklyn, but he is quite comfortable in his retirement condo (shelf).

4. Kids love to “find the monkey” on their Appaman gear, so we make sure to put a tiny monkey logo on every piece, either on an arm patch, on the side seam, a zipper pull, or hidden in the lining.

5. 2018 marks Appaman’s 15th anniversary. We’ve got lots in store, so stay tuned!

Bonus fact! Appaman HQ is officially closed on Norwegian National Day, so there is limited customer service on Thursday 17th May. Need help? Drop us a line at and we’ll get back to you ASAP.
