Celebrating New Year’s Eve With Kids: How to Get to Midnight With No Meltdowns

New Years Eve Ideas Kids | Appaman

New Year’s Eve is a very different experience once you have kids. The notion of a see-where-the-night-takes-you plan is out the window when little ones are part of the celebration. Instead, a structured evening is the best approach. But it doesn’t  mean you still can’t have fun! Plan little surprises throughout the evening for them and plan on lots of snacks and probably a few yawns. If all else fails, you can always rent the Minion movie and pop some popcorn. Here, some fun ideas and activities for celebrating New Year’s Eve with kids.

DIY Noise Makers
No question, one of the best parts about New Year’s Eve for kids is the fact you get to make some noise! Sure there are countless horns, blowers and the like you can pick up at a party store, but why not make use out of some bubble wrap sitting in your basement? We love this fun tip from Martha Stewart. Paint the flat side of the bubble with a festive colored marker and put a white runner or some white paper underneath. Then when it’s time to make some noise, let the little ones jump to their heart’s content.

Ballon Pop Countdown
Blow up balloons for every hour–or half hour–you’ll be celebrating and let the kids pop them themselves. If the kids are going to stay up until midnight, create balloons for every 15 minutes starting at 11:00pm.

Mocktail Hour
Get kids in the New Year’s Eve spirit with alcohol-free spirits. Sparkling apple cider is a no-brainer, but we’re into the idea of creating a signature mocktail for the evening. An Appaman favorite is the Tom & Jerry, where you spoon a big heap of beaten egg and sugar batter over a cup of hot water. Kids love it because they basically get a cup of sticky drinkable sugar.

Photo Booth Time
You’d be hard pressed to find a kid that doesn’t love dress-up time. Create a fun DIY photo booth with a bunch of funny props and costumes then put up a white bed sheet for the backdrop. Have the adults take turns snapping pics. Not only is it a blast for the kids, but you’ll have some awesome pics to commemorate the night.

New Years Eve Outfit Ideas for Kids
As a rule, if it sparkles, it’s New Year’s Eve worthy! But if your little girl is not so into sparkle, we love the idea of pairing a tuxedo jacket over a tuxedo blouse with a pair of pants or even skinny jeans. For more traditional girlie-girls, let her ring in 2016 in a fun and festive dress, like the Appaman Confetti Dress or our groovy Mod Dress. Boys can get into the act by adding a cool pair of suspenders and a bowtie to jeans and a button down shirt. He can also get major style points for wearing a sharp blazer over his favorite graphic tee.

Meet the Newest Appaman Staffers!

Appaman's newest staffers

In recent months, we’ve welcomed a few new faces here at Team Appaman, and it’s high time we introduce you to the newest members of our crew. As a small company, we’re a sum of our parts and want our fans and customers to get to know who is working hard together behind the scenes to bring your favorite Appaman gear from an idea to a shoppable, wearable and adorable product:

Lisa Christiano Appaman

Lisa Christiano (Wholesale Account Manager)
When our friend Jenna headed back home to her native Texas, Lisa came on board, bringing a longtime love of fashion and a retail background to the wholesale side of Appaman. Lisa is from Rockland County (but moving to Jersey City with her fluffy little dog, Ghost) and loves to read, write, travel, and watch movies. She is always down for some serious Harry Potter chat. But be warned that she’s a loyal Gryffindor before getting into a debate about the best Hogwarts house.

Danielle Civil

Danielle Civil  (Production/Design Assistant)
Remember Intern Dani from our Intern Q&A? Well, she’s back! Dani was such a great intern that we insisted on snatching her back up as a full-time employee as soon as she graduated from the University of Delaware, where she earned a a degree in apparel design and a minor in entrepreneurial business. Dani is from the suburbs of Philly, and loves animals (particularly sloths and manatees, but she has cats, turtles, and fish of her own), travel, photography, yoga, chai tea lattes, and Game of Thrones. Dani has had her sights set on the fashion biz for a long time. In her fifth grade yearbook she predicted that she’d be a fashion designer. Good thinking, fifth grade Dani!

Valerie Schwall

Valerie Schwall (Girls Designer)
It’s a basic requirement that all Appaman employees must love dogs, but for Valerie, it’s an interest that is particularly career relevant! When Valerie was younger, she decided to teach herself to sew by creating clothing and accessories for her dog. Soon after, she applied and was accepted to fashion school with a sewing portfolio composed entirely of dog clothing. At FIT, she expanded her interest to human clothing but still loves making beautiful wardrobes for her fur child, Meatball, who dresses better than many people. Valerie hails from New Paltz, a hippie town in upstate New York, where she gained a soft spot for tie dye. You’ll usually catch her in her signature head-to-toe black, except for when she and Meatball decide to wear matching holiday outfits.
